Business Owners: Are You Planning For Your Future?
We recognize that you, as a business owner, are very likely employed in the day-to-day operations of your company. However, are you giving ample time and consideration to the future: your business’s future, and how your business’s financial success impacts your and your family’s future?
We would like to introduce you to Exit Planning. While this might sound like something you do just before retiring, Exit Planning is really much more. Done correctly, Exit Planning is key to evaluating and growing your business today in preparation for your eventual retirement or sale of the company.
A recent survey by the Exit Planning Institute (EPI), asking business owners about their “life-after-business plan,” showed the majority of business owners have no formal plan in place for their future.
It is never too early to start looking ahead and carefully considering how you should move forward in the coming months and years: should you consider growing your business, exiting, or both? It’s important to keep in mind that the state of your business today can influence your future lifestyle.
According to a 2023 National State of Owner Readiness Report, business owners made the following statements about their businesses supporting their future lifestyle:
- 49% of business owner respondents want to exit within 5 years.
- 54% believe it is critical their company remains profitable to exit their company.
- 70% indicate they need the income from their business to support their lifestyle.
Working with a Certified Exit Planning Advisor (CEPA) can help you determine where you and your business are today, and if and how your business needs to grow to support your future needs.
